Birmingham half marathon runners 2008 start They love to run in Brum!

The Birmingham Half Marathon website has just been re-launched to coincide with the announcement of the details for the 2009 event – and it generated an amazing 1,000 entries in the first 24 hours!

What’s more, the 2009 race will also be tied in with the IAAF World Half Marathon Championship – a huge honour for the city.

The re-launch of the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon website generated a thousand entries in the first 24 hours.

Following the success of the 2008 event, Birmingham City Council is again staging the big run – sponsored by EDF Energy for the second year – on Sunday, October 11.

The re-launched website is vital in raising awareness of the event and helping to attract a bigger field than the 9,000 who took to the city’s streets in October 2008.

What’s more, this year’s race is to tie-in with the 18th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, which Birmingham has been selected to stage. This world-class road race will feature an estimated 200 of the planet’s best runners from around 50 countries and be held on the same morning at the EDF Energy run.

Both events will be staged on a brand new course around the city centre, starting on Cambridge Street near Paradise Circus and finishing on Broad Street near Centenary Square, and visiting such landmarks as Edgbaston Cricket Ground and Cadbury World between times.

Interestingly, this year’s Birmingham half marathon will also be known as the Race Against Climate Change, runners being provided with a dual training programme covering the physical preparation for the big race and also advice towards achieving a lower carbon lifestyle.

Last year’s inaugural half marathon was the first major road race to be staged in the city for 20 years and in addition to attracting a healthy field of runners pulled in 50,000 spectators.
