Birmingham Half Marathon

Client: Birmingham City Council
Project: Birmingham Half Marathon
Technology: php, MySQL
Location: http://www.birminghamhalfmarathon.com/

Birmingham City Council, keen to endorse the message that exercise is a vital component of a healthy way of life while also raising awareness of the need for a lower carbon lifestyle, wanted to establish a world-class annual half marathon after a 20-year gap.

Our brief was clear – we had to create an online presence for the new event that would reach the desired audience and generate participant numbers worthy of England’s second city.

Birmingham City Council wanted an in-depth information resource that not only met its objective of securing a large field for an event that had to sit comfortably alongside an abundance of world-class sporting occasions, but also satisfied the raft of stakeholders, from both the public and private sectors, involved in the project.

Consequently, the brief was highly prescriptive.

The site was well received by everyone with an interest in the new half marathon, which was staged in October 2008, and helped attract an inaugural field of nearly 9,000 with some 50,000 spectators lining the route.

The site was re-launched in June 2009 following the announcement of the full details for the 2009 event, which co-incides with the staging of the prestigious IAAF World Half Marathon Championship.

Importantly, both the Birmingham and Bristol half marathon projects had to re-enforce and enhance the two cities already healthy position on the international map, not just in terms of staging top-class sporting events, but in relation to their cultural standing, their environmental excellence, the strength of their amenities and resources and the overall quality of lifestyle enjoyed by their citizens.
