Bristol has a fine tradition of road running, having introduced a half marathon in 1989, staged the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in 2001, and launched a new 10k race in 2008.
Bristol City Council was keen to build on its reputation and make the half marathon, staged every September, and the 10k, held every May, even more successful, which crucially meant raising awareness and attracting greater numbers of participants.
Our brief was to design a digital environment that would reach out to the running community, both in the UK and beyond, and emphasise the city’s history and tradition while showcasing the quality of its two major road running events.
Bristol City Council’s ambitions and our own at 13strides – to help more people participate in sport – were in perfect harmony.
The resulting site, which features a simple online entry mechanism as well as an uncomplicated lay-out capable of managing a wealth of content, helped the 10k get off to a cracking start with 5,000 runners – double this number are expected to take part in 2009 – while the aim is to see the half marathon reach its capacity field of 20,000 in 2009, up from the 16,000 who participated in 2008.
Both this project and the similar one we undertook with Birmingham City Council, evidence our ability at 13strides to work with a raft of stakeholders in the public sector as well as with individual clients.
